A FORMER Nunnery Wood High School student is flying high after being named team coach of the RAF Falcons parachute display team.

Flight Sergeant Liam Lyons joins the team for the second time, now in the role of team coach.

Liam was born in Worcester in February 1983 and educated at Nunnery Wood High School before studying A-levels at Worcester Sixth Form College.

He joined the Army in 2001 before transferring to the RAF as a Physical Training Instructor in 2003. He has completed tours at RAF Odiham, DCAE Cosford and an operational detachment to Iraq. He was selected for parachuting duties in 2008 and served at the Parachute Training School (PTS) at RAF Brize Norton. In 2011 Liam was selected to join the RAF Falcons for his first tour on the team, remaining as a display parachutist until leaving the team in 2014 .

After the display team Liam moved back to PTS and successfully gained promotion to Flight Sergeant in 2020 where he became the Liaison Officer for 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester.

Liam now returns to the display team to start his second tour on the RAF Falcons as the team coach. The coach is responsible for all team training and putting together the manoeuvres for the next display season, as well as leading the team safely during each display and mentoring and developing the team.

He said: “I am extremely privileged and proud to be the RAF Falcons team coach. It is a huge honour and I relish the challenges and opportunities that lie in this role”

The RAF Falcons are the UK’s premier military parachute display team. Based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, they display at venues all over Britain and Europe throughout the year.

They have performed many times for the Royal Family and heads of state and set records and introduced many exciting innovations into formation skydiving.

Each year the team welcomes new members, with most parachutists spending three years on the team before leaving.

This year the team welcomes five new members in various roles as they prepare for the 2023 display season.

The RAF Falcons now begin the first phase of training for the 2023 display season in California.
