THE HEADTEACHER of a city school which saw almost 5,000 people register to find a match for a brave five-year-old pupil fighting leukaemia has praised the community for their ‘overwhelming’ support.
Oscar Saxelby-Lee needs a life-saving blood stem cell transplant in the next three months in his fight against T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia having already endured a month of gruelling chemotherapy at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Staff and volunteers at Pitmaston Primary School, led by headteacher Kate Wilcock, smashed the national record for a donor registration event last weekend as people travelled from across the county and as far as Bristol and Wales to help.
A staggering 4,855 potential stem cell donors registered on the day which also saw £3,800 raised during the weekend to aid the charity DKMS to process all of the samples collected.
“We felt so powerless when he was diagnosed and asked what we could do to help and I’m delighted we were able to do something,” Mrs Wilcock said.
“I’d be beyond overjoyed if we could find a match for Oscar.”
