Telling a story through music

Worcester Editorial 24th Feb, 2020   0

MUSIC lovers are being invited to discover why The Course of True Love never runs smoothly when the latest concert from Opera Worcester takes to the stage.

With a staggering cast of more than 20 soloists, the Opera Worcester chorus and special guests are planning to create a night to remember in May with its showcase of opera, operetta and musicals.

‘The Course of True Love’ on May 9 at the Swan Theatre promises a concert with a difference under the direction of Anthony Ravenhall and musical director Piers Maxim, conductor of the Elgar Chorale and director of music at Malvern Priory.

“We’ve created a context and characters, and are using a range of musicals genres to tell our story of The Course of True Love,” Anthony said.

“It’s a staged concert which in the first half will take our audience on an emotional journey through boy-meets-girl to courtship, temptation, heartache, reconciliation and eventually marriage.

“In the second, we are having a party to celebrate the wedding and our theme continues. Every wedding party needs entertainment so there are one or two special guests too.”

The evening will feature musical numbers from favourites like My Fair Lady and Half a Sixpence, to Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Wagner’s mighty Lohengrin and Die Fledermaus.

Chairman Caroline Causier said: “We have so many soloists capable of singing a wide range of music, we wanted to provide opportunities and showcase the singing and acting talent we have in the company.

“Anthony is also providing a workshop in March, and coaching our members in character development and stagecraft as we go along, so it’s turning into a tremendously enjoyable process and rehearsals are great fun.”
