TWO CHARITY walks for the price of one were undertaken on Saturday – both along the Worcestershire Way – one the usual route and the other in reverse.
Malvern’s Team Zulu was due to complete its tenth St Richard’s Hospice Worcestershire Way in a row due to take place on that day but with the Coronavirus restrictions the official event was cancelled.
The team, founded by Tarquin Shaw-Young, had already raised more than £3,000 for the cause and this was to be their tenth year.
Team Zulu was not to be deterred and walked the 34 miles – all socially-distanced – in reverse from the Red Lion in Malvern to Bewdley.
Meanwhile his two daughters Tuppence, 19, and Honesty, 17 – aka Team Billy – paced the regular route from Bewdley to Malvern.
The pair took on their challenge in memory of their dear friend Billy White, aged 17, who sadly died earlier in the year from Osteosarcoma.
Their funds raised will go towards The Bone Cancer Trust, which is dedicated to saving lives and improving outcomes for those affected by the disease.
Tarquin said the team had been kept in top physical shape and was committed to do the walk because, despite all of the hospice’s fund-raising activities being put on hold, it had continued to provide exceptional care.
“The teams crossed over midway on Roger’s Ridge and both made it back in one piece with Team Billy coming in 15 minutes before Team Zulu – Pickle the Dog also joined Team Zulu and walked the whole 34 miles. “
The Worcestershire Way is 74,000 steps – the equivalent of one fifth of the ascent of Everest or climbing the Empire State Building 143 times.
Both teams want to raise as much as they can for their chosen causes.
