Survey aims to get views on school bid

Worcester Editorial 15th May, 2021   0

COUNCIL education chiefs have called on Worcester residents to have their say on a £35million new secondary school for the city.

A month-long public consultation is being launched to find out what matters most to residents in the delivery of a new school for their children.

In February this year cabinet chiefs approved the creation of a new 600 place secondary school, in Worcester, to meet the increased demand for school places. Six possible locations have so far been identified but not made public.

Coun Marcus Hart, cabinet member for Education and Skills said: “Making sure children across the county have access to good quality education is a long-term priority for the County Council.

“Over the past five years, we have invested in developing facilities at the existing secondary schools in Worcester.

The level of additional places required now provides us with an opportunity to consider the delivery of a new school.

“The location of the site of any new school will consider several factors including reducing pressure from oversubscribed schools and helping parents to fulfil their preference in choice of secondary school for their children,” he added.

A new school will ensure children can access a secondary school place within their local community in a growing city.

The need for a new school in Worcester goes hand in hand with the approval of large housing developments around the city and improves choice and access for families.

The school will be delivered by Worcestershire County Council and run by an Academy sponsor. The process to appoint a sponsor will run in the Autumn Term of 2021 and will follow the Department for Education (DfE) Free School Presumption Process.

The survey runs until June 11.
