Students reminded to register for elections

Worcester Editorial 6th Oct, 2020   0

A PLANNED stall located near the ramp leading to the Sabrina Bridge has been cancelled due to rising concerns about the increase in Covid-19 cases.

In response to the the government making changes to voter registration, a stall was proposed by campaigners to inform city students about the alterations.

In the past universities routinely added all students to the electoral roll but now with individual registration many students are at risk of losing their voice on important issues that affect them in their local area.

Many students don’t know it is possible to register both at their home address and at their term time address when their home and term time addresses are in different local authorities.

Green Party Community Champion Tor Pingree said, “It’s not just students who could be missing off the electoral roll, many younger people who are renting, leading busy lives and possibly frequently moving around for work or studies could be in danger of missing out on their chance to have a say in local elections next year.”

Fellow Green Party campaigner Karen Lewing said: “In previous years we’ve had stalls at this location near the Sabrina Bridge and at the university freshers fayres to encourage more people to vote.

“This year we took the decision to cancel the planned stall to make sure we keep students safe and to comply with the government’s rule of six.”
