Stars of future in the spotlight

A COUNTY sports charity is inviting city athletes, children and supporters to an evening to highlight the achievements of Worcestershire’s young sporting talent.

CG5, which was founded to promote participation in sport, will host its ‘VIP evening’ on Friday, February 17 at the University of Worcester Arena, before the British Basketball League match between Worcester Wolves and London Lions.

County sports stars attending the event will includes swimmer and Rio Paralympic silver medallist Rebecca Redfern, canoeist Callie Halliday and seven-year-old golfing sensation, Jack Dirkin.

The event will also see CG5 set out its financial backing, grants and event plans for this year, as they look to give further support to sports people across the county.

CG5 takes its name from former Worcester Warriors lock Craig Gillies, who is a trustee at the charity, and his number five jersey. It has awarded £16,000 in sporting grants since being established last year.

Steve Edwards, a trustee of CG5, said: “Our event at the University of Worcester Arena is all about showcasing some of the fantastic young sportspeople we have in Worcestershire, as well as giving the next generation a platform to tell their story.

These are young people who we’ve supported over the past year with financial backing, so the event will also give us the opportunity to outline our fund-raising plans for 2017.

“We have a really exciting year ahead through a range of events across Worcestershire, which are vital in helping our fund-raising efforts and allowing us to keep supporting grassroots sports, including high potential individuals and teams.”

The event starts at 6.15pm and tickets cost £20 for adults and £10 for children, which will include a buffet, match programme and reserved courtside seating for the game.
