Standing Tall to make city-wide trail a big draw

Worcester Editorial 3rd Apr, 2018   0

COUNTY council chiefs and the University of Worcester have joined forces to sponsor a giraffe sculpture for the upcoming public art trail run by St Richard’s Hospice.

Their creation will join 29 others to be decorated and displayed in the city for Worcester Stands Tall from July 9 until September 16. The beautifully decorated, fibreglass giraffes will be displayed through Worcester’s streets and open spaces to form an interactive trail.

Alongside the large sculptures, there will be 25 smaller giraffe calves decorated by schools and community groups, and displayed in Crowngate Shopping Centre.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, council cabinet member for communities, said: “I am delighted the council is sponsoring a giraffe sculpture with the University of Worcester as it re-enforces the shared vision and commitment to the communities we jointly share across the city and the county.”

Sara Matthews, Worcester Stands Tall project manager, said: “We hope the hospice giraffes will help get people out in Worcester, engaging with public art and interacting with each other – helping to strengthen our communities.”

Once the art trail has finished, the large sculptures will be auctioned in October to raise money for the St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal. The appeal aims to raise the final £1.4million needed to build a bigger hospice.
