A CHRISTMAS tree with a difference has taken pride of place at the Guildhall thanks to the talents of St Johns knitters and crocheters.
The knitted Christmas tree was brought to life by Pat Richardson who was inspired by another knitted tree she had been informed about and decided to work together with local knitters/crocheters to create one for St. John’s.
The group meet weekly in St John’s library and have been knitting since March, more than fifty people took part and more than 1,500 squares have been knitted, which have been used to create the tree.
Her intention at the time was to get people, post-Covid, working together to produce something which would be visible. St John’s councillors helped to ensure it was placed on display at the Guildhall.
Coun Richard Udall said: “The tree is beautiful, it’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication, people have made new friends while knitting and it has helped boost the community, its great and I’m really proud of Pat and all her helpers”.
Coun Robyn Norfolk added “Over the year she has had many helpers, including neurodivergent young people and adults and Ukrainian refugees. The end result being the rather magnificent tree sitting in the reception area of the Guildhall”.
It was put on display in the St. John’s library before it was moved to the Guildhall.
It will move onto Crowngate and it will also be making an appearance in Cripplegate on December 18 at the Crackers in Cripplegate Christmas festival.
