St John’s flats do not have cladding like tragedy tower

CLADDING on the three high rise block of flats in St John’s is not the same as the one used on Grenfell Tower, the blocks owners have revealed.

Fortis Living confirmed the exterior is based on a render system and not a panel one used in the West London tower which saw an horrific fire last Wednesday.

So far 79 people are believed to have died in the tragedy although the Metropolitan Police admit the figure is likely to rise.

Local residents raised concerns about their flats with St John councillor Richard Udall in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The St John’s councillor demanded an urgent fire safety review of the high rise flats to provide reassurance.

In response, Fortis Living revealed all fire risk assessments for their high rise are undertaken annually and were last completed in April.

Staff have also worked with Hereford And Worcester Fire Service on training events and operational exercises to ensure firefighters can respond appropriately in the event of a fire.

“Upgrade works to corridors, fire doors and smoke alarm systems have been completed in recent years as part of the renovation  project. All this work was done in consultation with the Hereford and Worcester Fire Service,” the company said.

“There are no gas supplies or installations on the site, all were removed in 2010 and there are firebreaks on every floor to stop the spread of fire.

“The blocks feature a fully integrated fire alarm system as well as smoke vents.

“The system is maintained and serviced in line with current legislation and best practice and is linked direct to our 24 hour emergency line who will automatically call the appropriate services in the event of an incident,” the statement added.

Area Commander Mark Preece from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the blaze.

“With this incident in mind, we would like to remind people of the actions they can take to ensure that they protect themselves and their families in the event of a fire.”

“Working smoke alarms can provide the few vital extra seconds needed to escape in a fire, therefore it is so important that they are kept in working order and tested every week.”

“Having an escape plan in the event of an emergency is vital. We would encourage people to prepare and practice their plan of action and ensure that escape routes are clear, which will help ensure a speedy exit.

“It is also important that people living in high rise buildings are aware and familiar with the buildings evacuation procedure.”
