Speeding drivers to be watched on busy city road

Worcester Editorial 24th Aug, 2017   0

A CRACKDOWN on speeding drivers has been launched along a busy Worcester road in response to concerns raised by residents.

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia will be deploying a mobile speed camera to Dugdale Drive in Warndon Villages this month due to the number of drivers breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Speed data collected along the road found that about 45 per cent of drivers exceeded the speed limit and 15 per cent of vehicles were found to be travelling above 36.7mph.

The Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme will continue to collect data whilst the speed camera is in operation to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.

Anna Higgins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “We are launching these new community concern sites in Worcestershire to address the high level of concern in each of the local communities.

“Data collected has highlighted unacceptably high speeds and local people are understandably concerned.

“With a high number of vehicles travelling on each of the roads every day and their close proximity to residential areas, they represent risk to all road users.

“We hope that the presence of a speed camera will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.

“This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in the areas, reduce the risk of harm and improve the safety of the roads for all those who use them.”
