Southern Link Road footbridge up and running

Worcester Editorial 27th Dec, 2019   0

WORCESTERSHIRE’S newest footbridge situated over the A4440 Southern Link Road (SLR) is now open.

The footbridge over Crookbarrow Way is accessible from the south via Brockhill Lane and the north via the public right of way that runs parallel with Deer Avenue and the railway line in St Peters Estate.

Work continues to complete the ramp to and from the Crookbarrow Way footpath and this is expected to be open early next year.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “We wanted to open the main span of Crookbarrow Way Footbridge as soon as we could and ahead of the official opening early next year.

“This is a bridge that will greatly improve connectivity across Worcester for those who choose alternatives to travelling by car.

“It’s a key part of our development of an Active Travel Corridor between Worcester city centre and Pershore via Worcestershire Parkway to make the route more attractive and accessible for walkers and cyclists.”

The Crookbarrow Way Footbridge between the Whittington and Norton roundabouts is suitable for pedestrians, mobility scooters, bikes and those on horseback.

It provides a vital link between the communities of St Peters and Norton as well as supporting connectivity between the city centre and the new Worcestershire Parkway Station, which is set to open early next year.

This is the first of four crossings suitable for walking and cycling to be introduced to support easier crossing of the Southern Link Road. When the wider scheme is complete, the Crookbarrow Way Footbridge will be complemented by the Broomhall Way Footbridge, an underpass near the Ketch roundabout and a bridge over Hams Way near the Powick roundabout.
