Should the Christmas Covid rules suspension be scrapped?

Worcester Editorial 16th Dec, 2020   0

A SNAP poll of more than 3,800 Britons has revealed the relaxation of Covid rules over Christmas should be dropped.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to press ahead with the relax in Coronavirus restrictions for five days next week to allow residents in Worcester and beyond to meet each other over Christmas.

The plans have sparked controversy with a number of leading medical journals now suggesting the risk of a rise in Coronavirus cases in January would be too high if the plans went ahead.

According to YouGov, 57 per cent of Brits say the relaxation of rules over Christmas should be dropped  and current rules should be maintained over Christmas

However almost a third (31 per cent) think the relaxation of rules over Christmas should go ahead as planned

Majority of Tory, Labour and Lib Dem voters say plans should be dropped and current rules kept in place

55% per cent of 18-24 year olds say relaxation of rules should be dropped; 49 per cent of 25-49 year olds; 61 per cent of 50-64 year olds; and 70 per cent of 65+

Two of Britain’s leading medical journals said the plan to ease Covid rules over Christmas in the UK will be a ‘rash decision’ that will ‘cost many lives’.

The Health Service Journal and British Medical Journal said people might see the lifting of restrictions ‘as permission to drop their guard’.

The Labour Party has called on ministers to hold an emergency review of the plans. No 10 said the rules were ‘under constant review’ but it still intended to allow families to meet up.
