Shopping streets’ revamp nears end

Worcester Editorial 11th Oct, 2019   0

A MAJOR revamp of one of Worcester’s busiest shopping streets is set to be completed in the coming weeks, highways chiefs have revealed.

Improvements on The Shambles and Church Street have continued at pace following the completion of the works on Church Street at the end of July.

Since then, the new footway and kerbing has been installed at the junction of Trinity Street and St Swithin’s Street.

The remaining footway and kerbing works at the south end of The Shambles have also been completed.

Over the past couple of weeks, the old central carriageway block paving has been removed and resurfacing work was set to begin last week.

Adam Giagnotti, owner of The Olive Branch on Church Street said: “We’re really pleased with the improvements which have been made to The Shambles and Church Street.

“The workforce couldn’t have been more helpful, they kept us up to date with what was happening and ensured customers were able to access our restaurant at all times. They even pointed a few in our direction!

“The standard of the work looks fantastic and our outdoor seating looks even better now on the new paving.”

Resurfacing works on the central carriageway are being carried out during overnight closures meaning no access for vehicles to St Swithin’s Street, Mealcheapen Street and The Shambles between 8pm and 6.30am

Following the completion of the carriageway resurfacing, the remaining work which includes the installation of the street furniture and planting of new trees, will take place in the autumn.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “The area is looking fantastic and once the final carriageway resurfacing has taken place, the transformation will almost be complete.

Phoebe Dawson from Worcester BID, said: “We’re delighted to have worked alongside Worcestershire County Council and Worcester City Council to ensure our businesses were kept up to date with progress throughout the improvement works to The Shambles and Church Street.
