Severn Stars looking to make Worcester arena a fortress

SEVERN Stars will be aiming to keep their early spot at the summit of the Netball Super League table when they make their home bow against Strathclyde Sirens tomorrow (Saturday).

The side will head to the University of Worcester Arena on top of the league after a comprehensive 57-41 win against Leeds Rhinos last Saturday.

The Stars led from the opening stages of the match and steadily increased their lead throughout before racing out of the Rhinos’ sight in the final quarter.

They won just two of their nine home fixtures last season on their way to a sixth-placed finish.

But head coach Jo Trip said she wants to put that right this season and make the arena one of the toughest places in the league for opposition teams to come.

She added: “We are really excited to play our first game in front of our friends, family and fans at our home ground – the University of Worcester Arena.

“This season we are looking to put our stamp on our home venue, making it one of the toughest venues for opposition to play at.

“The crowd provides us with our eighth woman and the energy and support they give us will make this possible.”

Last weekend’s season opener event in Nottingham, which saw all teams competing on one day, also saw tomorrow’s opponents Strathclyde suffer a narrow defeat against Team Bath.

Trip added: “Strathclyde Sirens put up a good fight against Team Bath.

“We are making sure we have a good understanding of their strengths and where we feel we can expose them.

“The difference for us this week is that Sirens have more of a moving circle, and they have a good defence unit which has played together for years, so we will look to break down each area and make sure we have a good plan heading into Saturday.”
