All-round marathon effort pleases Chris

A DIABETIC Worcester man who is limbering up to tackle the London Marathon has praised the ‘incredible’ support he’s received from city residents and businesses.

Chris Boaz, from Claines, only started running just 18 months ago and began his preparation for the grueling 26.2 mile run back in November. He’s now in training three to four times a week as the marathon draws ever closer.

The 34-year-old was diagnosed with type one diabetes just before his 14th birthday – a condition which affects his training – but by running the marathon he hopes to raise awareness of the condition.

Chris has set a target of raising £1,900 for Diabetes UK. And he’s on course to do so having raised £800 so far thanks to the generous donations from Worcester residents and businesses.

“It’s been incredible so far, I’ve had a lot of support from local businesses. The local support is just fantastic,” Mr Boaz said.

By running the marathon Chris is determined to raise more awareness of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as he said the condition isn’t explained very well and neither do many people know the symptoms of the condition.

“I think diabetes in general gets a great amount of coverage in the national press. But, I don’t think it’s explained very well and that creates a negative impression of people who do have diabetes, especially Type 1,” he added.

“Type 2 is often in the press and as you can see is linked to an unhealthy lifestyle – causing the negative vibes towards diabetes.

“I would really like to raise the awareness of the difference in the two conditions. I have Type 1 diabetes. But, I also think it’s really important that awareness of the symptoms is increased.”
