GREENPEACE campaigners have called for a green recovery from the Coronavirus crisis with major investment in local public transport, walking and cycling routes.

Worcestershire Greenpeace activists were out early in the morning calling for more safe cycling and walking routes in Worcester.

Using recyclable dissolvable paint, they left slogans on pavements at five points in the city centre. According to activists lockdown has shown with encouragement and safe spaces, Worcestershire people will walk and cycle.

One of the campaigners who joined the drive said: “We need a Green Recovery, including massive investment in walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure here in Worcestershire.

“That’s why Green activists have left this clear message to the Government in five places: Parts of Lowesmoor for pedestrianisation. A pop-up cycle lane on City Walls Road and a 20mph speed limit.

“A cycle lane on Deansway by the college and a pedestrian crossing at the City Bridge and South Parade as well as a 20 mph speed limit around North Quay, Dolday and Croft Road are also needed.

“We need more space for people to walk and cycle safely in Worcestershire, not £27billion for new road building.’

“Cycling brings lots of benefits to our community by keeping people fit, reducing air pollution and lowering carbon emissions.

“Worcestershire County Council has made plans but they need to happen now, so we need funding from central Government to make this happen. We want Government to invest in clean, green transport so more people can cycle, walk and take public transport safely.”
