Pushing hard for top total

A FORMER Worcestershire all-rounder and his best friend have raised thousands of pounds for St Richard’s Hospice after completing a gruelling cycle challenge from John O’Groats to Lands’ End in just ten days.

Gareth Andrew and Arti Fiaz raised more than £15,000 for the county hospice which provides end of life care for adults affected by life-limiting illnesses.

The ambitious pair set off on September 19 and throughout their journey gained sponsorship from Hill’s Estate Agents, a business owned by Arti’s brother Azmat.

The pair covered more than 1,000 miles as they cycled from the most northern point of Scotland to the south-westerly tip of England, with a target completion date of September 28.

On discussing his motivation for completing the challenge, Gareth said: “I unfortunately lost both parents in 2016 over a short six-month period.

“I’m still dealing with the huge hole this left and I knew I had to do something to help others.

“My own personal experience has shown me just how important the care that St Richard’s Hospice provides, both for end of life and their ongoing support for the families and loved ones as they go through a hugely traumatic time.”

Gareth and Arti chose to take on the challenge after a discussion about things they had not yet faced in life and decided on the 1,000-plus mile cycle, despite neither being avid cyclists.

Both men had support through the cricket club but especially through their friend Frank Watson who not only is a member at Ombersley CC, but also taught Arti at school.

Arti said: “I’m not ashamed to admit I have a personal interest.

“As someone from a minority background, I’m keen to raise awareness within the Asian community of the tremendous support and assistance the Hospice provides for service users requiring end of life care.

“Culturally, the responsibility has fallen on immediate family to nurse their loved ones during this difficult time but there is an alternative environment that can help make this period easier for all involved.”
