Pupils thanked for their gifts

STUDENTS from Bishop Perowne CE College’s English as an additional language department have receieved a letter of thanks from pupils in Malawi following gift packages they sent last year.

Bishop Perowne had invited Albert Mvula, a PhD student at the University of Worcesrer to the school to talk to the students about growing up in Malawi.

He spoke about the challenges facing the country and how he only received his first pair of shoes at age 14. To accompany the talk, Bishop Perowne students from Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Romania and Portugal performed cultural dances.

Students and members of the wider community then collected stationery and books for Albert to deliver to pupils at Mtavu Primary School in the Mzimba district of Malawi during a visit.

Headteacher Mark Pollard said: “It was wonderful to receive the letter signed by some of the pupils at Mtavu Primary School and see the pictures of them with the items collected by our students.

“Schools in Malawi have a shortage of basic teaching materials meaning pupils are unable to make the most of their education.

“Following Albert’s visit, our English as an additional language students, and staff who work with them, were extremely keen to help make a difference by sending books and stationery.

“We would like to thank Albert for delivering the items and everyone who donated,” he added.
