Pub to host EU debates

Worcester Editorial 18th May, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE COUNTDOWN to the EU referendum has begun in earnest at a Worcester pub which will again host a series of debates before polling day.

Vote Leave’s Gisela Stuart visited the Cap n Gown on The Tything ahead of Monday’s (May 16) debate which was chaired by Lord Richard Faulkner of Worcester, deputy speaker in the House of Lords.

The debates will run for a further six weeks, with the final taking place on Monday, June 20, three days before the nation goes to the polls to decide our future direction in Europe.

On Monday (May 23) from 8pm, the debate will be on whether its better for Britain to be with the people of Europe than against them and whether the free moment of EU citizens actually benefits the country.

Peter Atkinson, Dean of Worcester Cathedral, and Professor David Green, Vice Chancellor University of Worcester, will speak for the motion while UKIP’s Diane James MEP or party chairman Steve Crowther will speak against the motion. This debate will be filmed by PBS NewsHour Weekend, the flagship weekend newscast for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) from the USA.

A 12-minute documentary will be screened on the debate on PBS in the United States on the weekend of June 18/19.

Admission to all debates will be free and on a strictly first come, first served basis. Raffle tickets to count people in will be issued from 6pm. Those who wish to watch the debate but unable to get in will then be re-directed to Bishop Perowne CE College to watch it on a big screen in the auditorium.

The King George Community Hub on Brickfields, Christopher Whitehead School, Haybridge High School, Hagley, and Holy Trinity School, Kidderminster, have also agreed to host the debates online.

A live webcast of the debates will also be shown online at www.youtube.com/CapNGrownWorcester.
