In praise of county's volunteers

Worcester Editorial 16th Jun, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

VOLUNTEERS across Worcestershire have been celebrated at a prestigious award ceremony at The Hive.

Worcestershire County Council held the event to coincide with National Volunteers’ Week (June 1-12) in order to help promote and celebrate the valuable work of volunteers throughout the county.

Volunteers, members of the public, council representatives and local businesses all attended to help celebrate the tireless and dedicated work of volunteers in their local communities, and the difference they make to lives in Worcestershire.

Coun Tony Miller, Chairman of Worcestershire County Council, said: “It gives me great pleasure to be able to recognise the hard work undertaken by volunteers across the county. Volunteers give their time generously without any expectation of reward but we hope this celebration event will go some way in recognising their vital contribution.”

Voluntary organisations from across Worcestershire had the opportunity to network and promote volunteering roles with presentations from a number of guest speakers including Clare Marchant, Chief Executive of Worcestershire County Council.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Localism and Communities, said: “Volunteers dedicate their time and effort to their local communities, and the volume of nominations for these awards demonstrates just how much respect and recognition the people of Worcestershire have for their accomplishments. The Volunteer Awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise ordinary people achieving extraordinary things.”

The winners of this year’s awards included Jenny Ashman from Midlands Air Ambulance (Fundraising Volunteer of the Year), Laura Gill from The Monday Night Club (Health and Wellbeing Volunteer of the Year), Debbie Manns from Kemerton Early Years Pre School and Forest School (Environmental & Education Volunteer of the Year) and Sight Concern Worcestershire (Volunteer Team of the Year).

Also, John Purser from Deaf Direct (Longstanding Commitment), Paul Diment from Sight Concern Worcestershire (Newbie of the Year), Matthew from The Hive (Young Volunteer of the Year) and John Phillips from YSS Ltd (Unsung Hero).
