Plenty to celebrate as results are revealed

Worcester Editorial 28th Aug, 2019   0

CELEBRATIONS were on the timetable for many city students as the nervous wait for GCSE results came to an end this morning.

Exam results were revealed with teenagers across Worcester being marked with grades from 9 to 1, replacing the traditional A* to G.

The new grading scheme was brought in alongside a new GCSE curriculum in England. Now, 9 is the highest grade, while 1 is the lowest, not including a U (ungraded).

Three number grades – 9, 8 and 7 – correspond to the old-style top grades of A* and A.

A total of 60 per cent of students at Bishop Perowne CE College achieved a grade 4 or higher in English and maths, with 40 per cent achieving a grade 5 or above.

Notably, seven students achieved an outstanding 60 GCSEs between them at grades 9-7 putting them among the top two to three per cent in the population.

Among the top performers were Dominic Olney who scored four at grade 9, three at grade 8 and one at grade 7 and Dan Millward who picked up three at grade 9, five at grade 8 and two at grade 7.

Mark Pollard, headteacher at Bishop Perowne, said: “We’re thrilled that so many students achieved such outstanding results, congratulations to every one of them.

“They all showed great dedication during the exam period and worked extremely hard to achieve their grades.

King’s Worcester pupils and staff are celebrating after 66 per cent of their Year 11 pupils delivered grades at 9 to 7 with 42 per cent at 9 to 8.

Unusually there were four sets of twins receiving their results.

Olivia and Sophie Burden, Aston and Olivia Campbell-Kerr, Millie and Sophie Connor and Ellie and Lani Overfield between them received 83 GCSEs, with 75 per cent of these being 9-7.

Sisters Ellie and Lani Overfield will be celebrating with their brother, Fletcher, who received an A and 2 B’s in his A levels last week.

Keen sportsman and musician Owen Preston was delighted with his results after gaining 11 GCSEs grades 9-8. Owen has successfully balanced his passion for rugby, cricket and music and also achieving impressive academic results

Acting headmaster, Jon Ricketts, said: “We’re incredibly fortunate to teach such enthusiastic and dedicated children here at King’s. They have worked hard this year to produce some really fantastic results. With pupils on average taking 10 GCSEs and combined with all the co-curricular activities they enjoy at King’s, these results are a testament to their dedication to learning.

Students at Nunnery Wood High School topped the class once again with 70 per cent earning their GCSE in English and maths, 28 per cent walking away with grades 9 to 7 and 61 per cent earning grades 9 to 5.

Headteacher Stephen Powell said: “Following a great Ofsted report, Nunnery starts the new school year with a huge amount of positivity. A huge well-done to students, staff and parents for working together so brilliantly.”

Tudor Grange Academy Worcester students celebrated another positive set of GCSE results.

Maisie Leyland achieved seven grade 9s and two grade 8s and a distinction at grade 6 Music; Tiana Lacey six grade 9s and three grade 8s; Benjamin Leeson three grade 9s, three 8s, one 7 and one 6; Ollie Hoinville one 9, five 8s, two 7s and one 6.

With nearly 40 per cent of grades at the top level (grades 9 or 8) and 60 per cent of grades at 9-7, celebrations were also on the timetable at RGS Worcester.

Amongst those celebrating was Will Osborne who achieved 10 GCSEs at the top 9 grade. Will is one of the leading Fencers in his age group nationally.

Liam Leonard also achieved all 9 grades in 10 GCSE subjects. Liam is one of the very best young musicians in Worcestershire; he is a Grade 8 Double Bass and Diploma pianist, who won the Bromsgrove Music Festival last year.

Adrian Parsonage, headteacher of The River School, said: “We are really pleased with the Year 11 students who have been a credit to themselves, The River School and their parents.

“This is reflected in their results which, in many cases, matched or exceeded expectations based on prior attainment.

“All students – 100% -achieved 5 or more GCSEs and the top grade levels of 8 and 9 were achieved across a variety of subjects.”
