Plastic free efforts get council support

Worcester Editorial 4th May, 2019   0

COUNCIL chiefs have lent their unanimous support to efforts in small Welsh village to make the River Severn plastic free from source to sea as part of the ‘Sending a Message in a Bottle campaign.

The campaign begun in Llandidloes, the first town on the Severn, and aims to encourage shops and other businesses to stop using so much plastic on products, educate children and their parents to stop buying so much plastic and remove rubbish from the River Severn.

Coun Lynn Denham, Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the city, proposed the motion and asked city councillors to lend their support in a similar manner as colleagues in Gloucester did earlier this year.

“The aim of the campaign is to reduce plastic waste and litter in towns and rivers, carry out community-wide litter pick events and improve recycling rates across the city,” she said.

The Cathedral councillor said she had spoken to the creator of the campaign and also reminded councillors of an agreement last summer which saw the council commit to no single use plastics.

“I hope we can make progress with that and take the campaign to the next level,” she added.

Her calls were backed by Labour deputy leader Coun Joy Squires who said: “I was born and brought up within a mile of the River Severn in Shrewsbury and since moving to Worcester 32 years ago I have lived within a mile of that same river.”

“This is a river which has been part and parcel of my life and I am sure that is true for many of us here. That’s why I am keen we express our solidarity with Llanidloes,” she added.

Conservative Coun Stuart Denligh-Maxwell said: “The river is much cleaner than it has been for a long time but one of my pet goats, as an umpire for British Rowing, is some of the worst culprits are the sports people who use the river and leave bottles on the side.

“One of the messages I would like to put out is to encourage clubs to ask their members to tidy up after themselves because if we can sort that out that would be quite a big step forward with the many clubs along the river.”
