PENSIONS minister Paul Maynard visited Worcester Shrub Hill Station on Monday to highlight the government’s announcement of £2.2billion to improve local transport connections in the Midlands.
The Local Transport Fund – made possible by the re-allocation of the northern link of HS2 money – will be made available from 2025 to give local authorities enough time to develop their funding plans.
Worcstershire’s share of the money is £209.6million.
Mr Maynard said: “As Minister for Pensions, I’m passionate about a transport system that is accessible and affordable, preventing older people from being cut off from their wider community.
“That is why I’m pleased that Worcester will benefit from the £209.6 million being given to Worcestershire as part of our Local Transport Fund.
“This investment will be a major boost to the community here, and I look forward to seeing the improvements that will be made.”
It is estimated that over the seven years of the funding it will be on average at least nine times more than cities like Worcester receive through the current mechanism for funding local transport improvements in the area.
