Path warning as council staff begin flood clear-up

Worcester Editorial 9th Mar, 2020   0

COUNCIL chiefs have asked city residents not to take to the riverside paths until they have been cleared as the clean-up following last month’s record-breaking floods gets into top gear.

The deluge from storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge saw the River Severn expand onto the flood plain on several occasions as Worcester was once again hit by flooding similar to the devastating floods of 2007 and 2014.

While forecasters are keeping an eye on the potential impact of heavy rain over Mid Wales this evening (Monday), council staff have begun the task of reclaiming the riverside paths from the effects of mother nature.

City Council teams were in action over the weekend to start the clean-up of the riverside paths following the floods.

Work will continue all this week and council chiefs anticipate the full clean-up will take at least two weeks. In some places, including Bromwich Parade, the mud left behind by the flood reaches about halfway up a pair of wellington boots.

A city council spokesman said: “Over the weekend the focus was on clearing the stretch of South Quay and Kleve Walk from the bridge down to the Cathedral.

“Today our teams are in action around Diglis Avenue and the Diglis Hotel. We will be bringing in a tractor to help out at Bromwich Parade.

“We are advising people, for their own safety, not to walk on any of the riverside paths until they have been safely cleared,” he added.
