Paralympians make a splash to mark pool opening

Worcester Editorial 24th Jan, 2017   0

LOCAL Rio paralympics medal winners Rebecca Redfern and Claire Cashmore were on hand to formally open Worcester’s new £10.8million swimming pool.

The pool was opened during a ceremony yesterday (Tuesday) where Rebecca joined forces with Worcester Mayor Coun Paul Denham to cut the ribbon.

Rebecca, who trains with Worcester Swimming Club and scooped the silver in the women’s SB13 100metre breaststroke at the games then took the plunge and dived in for a swim.

“It’s great to see Worcester investing in this fantastic new pool,” she said.

“The new look Perdiswell Leisure Centre is exactly what we need if we’re going to grab the medals at Tokyo in 2020.”

Among the highlights of the ceremony were speeches from the Mayor, Claire and Ian Silvera from Sport England.

Current cabinet member for leisure Coun Jabba Riaz spoke as did Coun Mike Johnson who held the role for the Tories when the project was given the green light.
