Opportunity to add your voice to the many

Worcester Editorial 13th Jan, 2020   0

AMATEUR tenors from across Worcestershire are being sought for one of the county’s most prestigious classical choirs.

The Worcester Festival Choral Society began almost 160 years ago and was often conducted by Sir Edward Elgar in the early days.

There are currently vacancies for tenors to join the 140-strong chorus.

Chairman Ben Cooper said: “If you sing tenor and think you might enjoy learning and performing the ‘classical choral greats’ with us in the magnificent setting of Worcester Cathedral, we’d love to hear from you.”

He said people did not necessarily need previous choral experience but some ability to read music was an advantage.

“We’re a very friendly lot with members of all ages and always enjoy singing together.

“The main thing is a love of music.”

The choir is led by Worcester Cathedral’s director of music Samuel Hudson and the society’s rehearsals are held in Worcester Cathedral on Monday evenings during term-times.

The choir performs three major concerts each year at the cathedral where the society performs some of the world’s best-loved choral works, such as Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem, as well as more modern classics.

Accompanying the choir is a professional orchestra and concerts feature world-class soloists.

The society’s next concert, which will be sea-themed and include Vaughan Williams’ epic A Sea Symphony, is on March 21.

The choir also holds a ‘Come and Sing’ workshop day, a quiz night and other activities and members can apply for the renowned Three Choirs Festival Chorus each year.

Interested tenors should contact membership secretary Sally Rees at [email protected] or call 01684 564721, then go along to rehearsal at Worcester Cathedral from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday, January 20.
