Nurses muck in for charity muddy race

A GROUP of nurses will swap ward rounds for war paint when they tackle the Race for Life Pretty Muddy event.

The five ward sisters who work on Laurel 2 Ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital will take part in the 5k Cancer Research UK event on Saturday, July 16 at Worcester Racecourse.

Knowing first hand the difference clinical trials can make, the nurses wanted to do something different to raise funds for research into cancer and so, decided to take part in the women-only, muddy, obstacle course.

Nursing sister Emma Morris, will be running in memory of her nan Mary Keating from Kidderminster who died of lung cancer eight years ago.

Joined by her mum, Michelle Hobday, from Worcester, the 33-year-old said: “We can’t wait to take on Pretty Muddy and get as messy as possible. We see every day what a difference research is making to the lives of patients but we also know how much more there is to do. That’s why we wanted to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK.”

Healthcare assistant Nuala Edwards, aged 31, is also racing for her nan who died of bowel cancer, aged 75.

She said: “We all know someone affected by cancer and wish there was more we could do to help. This is a great way for us to join forces and do our bit to help beat cancer sooner.”

While women of all ages are signing up for Pretty Muddy, others less keen to get their hands dirty can still take part in the traditional 5k and 10k courses at same venue the following day, Sunday, July 17.

Kelly Rumble, event manager in Worcester, said: “We’re delighted to have such an enthusiastic team of nurses join us this year, they embody the spirit of sisterhood that this event is all about.

“Race for Life Pretty Muddy is not about being fit or fast, it’s all about overcoming obstacles together to help beat cancer sooner. The atmosphere on the day is incredible with lots of mud, sweat, cheers and sometimes tears, as women tackle obstacles from hay bales and hurdles to tyre runs and tunnels.

“By helping to raise vital funds, everyone who takes part will know they’re helping Cancer Research UK’s scientists in their ultimate challenge, bringing forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
