Nunnery city councillor Carver stands down after nine months

Worcester Editorial 4th Mar, 2022   0

NUNNERY councillor and former MEP Jim Carver has resigned his seat after just nine months on the city council.

The former UKIP MEP and Conservative councillor revealed his decision last Thursday (February 24) and in a statement said ‘new opportunities’ in his working life were the reason for his sudden departure.

However, The Observer understands a row with the Tory party’s leadership has also taken place with a source telling the newspaper Mr Carver said the leadership ‘should reflect on how they have been running things recently’. Mr Carver declined to comment on the claim when asked for a response.

The former West Midlands UKIP MEP only made a return to front-line politics in May last year when he secured the long-held Labour seat for the Tories in the city council elections.

Together with fellow former UKIP member Coun Owen Cleary, he helped deliver a share of the party’s vote to the Conservatives to allow the Tories to achieve a majority of the Guildhall.

In addition to representing Nunnery on the city council, he sat on the authority’s Communities Committee, Licensing and Health Committee, Place and Economic Development Committee and Worcestershire Regulatory Services Board.

“As I approach new opportunities in my working life, I realise I won’t be able to fulfil my council duties as I desire,” Mr Carver said. “Furthermore, standing down now, ahead of May’s local elections, saves any extra unnecessary expense or burden on the taxpayer as my replacement will be elected at the same time as the forthcoming local elections in May.”

Coun Marc Bayliss, Worcester City Council leader and Tory group leader, said: “Jim has been a valued colleague whose life is taking him in a different direction and he doesn’t wish to be unable to give his councillor role the attention he knows it requires.

“I respect his decision and wish him the best of luck for the future.”

His sentiments were echoed by Worcester MP Robin Walker who said: “I know Jim has worked hard on behalf of local residents and I wish him well for the future.”
