Nominations are open for City's sporting heroes

Worcester Editorial 17th Jul, 2017   0

WORCESTER residents are being called on to nominate their sporting heroes for a prestigious annual award.

Nominations are open for the 14th annual City of Worcester Sport Awards which will take place on Thursday, September 14 at the University of Worcester Arena, in partnership with Sport Worcester and supported by Worcester City Council.

Long standing supporter of the awards, Steve Cram MBE, has been confirmed again as key speaker, with BBC Midlands Today sports presenter and reporter Dan Pallet, to act as host.

The evening welcomes 120 sporting VIPs, award nominees and their families, local sports clubs and businesses, council members, award sponsors and supporters, senior Freedom Leisure representatives and the Mayor of Worcester, to a dinner and drinks reception, followed by the award announcements and presentations.

The awards honour local sporting heroes, high achievers and ambassadors with 16 award categories, all supported by 19 key sponsors.

Categories are designed to recognise the achievements of sporting participants, schools, volunteers, coaches, clubs, teams, volunteers and organisations.

Matthew Rogers, Freedom Leisure active communities manager, said: “These awards are a highlight of the city’s sporting calendar. We want to reach out and remind local sports organisations, schools, clubs and athletes to nominate their worthy students, coaches and teams for these wonderful awards.

“It’s worth noting that those who win their categories go on to the next regional heats, with the ultimate goal of reaching the national BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in December.

“These awards really are a celebration of Worcester’s sporting talent in grass roots sport, and one we’re extremely proud to deliver.”
