New pub raises parking concerns

A RUN-DOWN pub in Barbourne is set to be given a new lease of life after plans to build a new housing development in the area were given the go-ahead.

But proposals to demolish the Cavalier Tavern, off St George’s Lane North, and replace it with 11 homes and a pub were met with concern by both residents and councillors about the amount of traffic it may create.

However, Worcester City Council’s planning committee approved the outline plans at a meeting on Thursday (December 18) with the condition the final appearance of the properties would be agreed when the reserved matters application was submitted.

Katie Stuart, a resident of Shrubbery Road, raised issues with parking on St George’s Lane and, coupled with the development of the former Worcester City football ground, said she feared it would only get worse if this was approved.

“Parking is a really big problem in that area, particularly in the evening,” she said. “You will get home, there’s nowhere to park so people will park on corners right next to junctions and I think it will make it very dangerous round there.

“It will get worse and there is going to be an accident. There is a lot of school children walking down there in the morning and afternoon.

“We are struggling as it is and now we are putting more and more properties in the area.”

Coun George Squires, councillor for the area, said he was keen to see the ‘unsightly’ pub redeveloped but said residents had contacted him with worries about parking, noise disturbance and the fact it was not in-keeping with its surroundings.

Coun Lynn Denham, councillor for the Cathedral ward, and Coun Pat Agar, councillor for Nunnery ward, added their concerns about over-development.

“They are just trying to squash an awful amount on to the site and they are missing the recreational activity of the canal,” Coun Denham said.

“Just because what is there now is so awful, there is always a tendency to accept whatever is put on the table.”

Coun David Wilkinson, councillor for Bedwardine, added: “I just worry we are missing an opportunity here.

“Over the last two years this community has done its best to assure the ambiance of this canal has remained at its best.

“There aren’t many canal side pubs in Worcester and while I agree with supporting this I do think certain conditions should be put in place.”

A total of eight councillors were in favour, two voted against and one abstained.
