New play’s plot delves deep into village life..

THEATRE lovers are being invited to a new play from Worcester REP which delves a little deeper into the Worcestershire countryside than some may feel comfortable with.

Lost the Plot is a new dark comedy by Nick Wilkes about a pair of village gravediggers and shows the still-waters of village life it seems can run deeper than may first appear.

In the play, cousins Bill and Sam have always carried out their work with a dignified diligence.

But when they discover their great-grandfather was not who they thought and with questions over a missing family fortune it doesn’t take long before a few more holes start appearing in the churchyard than is normal.

“It’s good fun to be playing on stage with coffins, skulls and the sort of scenery and props you won’t find in an average play, but be prepared for a few shocks as well as a few laughs,” Nick said.7

The writer is no stranger to village life having been brought up in a small village on the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire border,

“We had no shop, no pub and no white line down the middle of the road,” he said.

“But we did have hedges which have been growing since medieval times, parish records that stretched back centuries, and a church that in various forms had stood on the same site for longer than anyone could fathom.

“It always intrigued me how connected the village was with its past, and how, when reading some of the parish almanacs that stretched back centuries, you could almost see and hear your ancestors walking around the village.”

Lost the Plot runs from Tuesday (September 25) to Saturday (September 29) at the Swan Theatre’s Vesta Tilley studio.
