New plans revealed for former pool site

A BID to build 40 new affordable homes on the site of Worcester’s former swimming pool at Sansome Walk has been revealed by housing chiefs.

Sanctuary has taken the wraps off revised plans for the site as it seeks to end the long-running saga which has surrounded the derelict site since it was closed in 2017.

The developer previously looked set to take over the site under proposals for a development of 76 new homes which went through consultation with local residents.

Last year Worcester City Council appointed DSM Demolition Limited to demolish the former swimming pool site and remediate the site for development.

The council will meet the cost of the work, which is expected to be in the region of £2.636million in total. The cost will be supported by a grant from central Government’s Land Release Fund.

The city’s former pool has been closed since the new multi-million pound leisure centre opened its doors in Perdiswell in 2017. The site has been blighted with problems after the discovery of asbestos in the derelict building.

In the new proposals Sanctuary wants to develop 20 one-bedroom apartments, eight one-bedroom cottage flats and 12 new houses with a mix of two, three and four bedrooms.

Local amenity space would be enhanced and 26 car parking spaces provided for use by existing residents, alongside dedicated parking for the new development. The new homes would also incorporate a range of sustainability features including air source heat pumps and solar panels.

David Soothill, Sanctuary’s director of development for England, said: “As a major investor and employer in Worcester, we’re delighted to submit our plans to bring new affordable homes to this important site in the heart of the city.

“We believe the proposals will help meet the need for more affordable housing and be a high-quality addition to the local community.”

Demolition of the existing building is currently under way and due to be completed shortly.
