A BRAND-NEW ladies only swimming session has been added to the timetable at Perdiswell Leisure Centre by operator Freedom Leisure.
Sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm each Sunday and give local women the opportunity to improve their swimming skills and fitness in a fun, safe and friendly environment.
Working in partnership with Worcester City Council, Perryfields Community Association and Young Solutions, it’s hoped the sessions will tackle the unease felt by some women on swimming in a mixed environment.
Young Solutions funding has allowed for blinds to be installed in the pool viewing area and gym of Perdiswell Leisure Centre creating a private environment for the swimming session.
Female lifeguards will also ensure the safety of swimmers every Sunday evening.
Coun Jabba Riaz, chair of Worcester City Council’s Communities Committee and chair of Perryfields Community Association said: “I identified this need within the city after successfully helping over 50 women from the South Asian community to swim in the last year.
“It came to our attention after talking to other groups in the city there was a need for a women’s only swimming session that catered for all.
“I am pleased to have formed this task force which included Freedom Leisure/Young Solutions and the City Council to come up with this solution.
“We are grateful for the funding to enable the swimming sessions to go ahead in total privacy and for Freedom Leisure who have realised the need and timetabled this in.
“This will hopefully give even more women the opportunity to learn and enjoy the sport of swimming in a safe environment”.
