A NEW £14,000 playground has been opened in a special needs school thanks to kind-hearted donation.

Fort Royal School officially opened its new play area on Friday (October 9).

The Playdale project was part of phase three of a programme supported by The Friends of Fort Royal which started in 2011.

The scheme aimed to enhance and develop the outdoor learning and play areas of the school.

The installed a basket swing, a new fort structure with climbing walls, nets and two slides.

Margaret Jones, grant administrator, said: “We wanted to create a new vibrant space with a range of equipment to meet the needs of our children which would offer something a little more challenging and exciting.

An area that would help and develop the children’s physical strength, but also encourage imaginative play and communication skills, helping them become more independent and self-confident.”

The existing activity zone was more than 28-years-old and made off wood. it became dangerous and was closed off to the children last year.

in the last four years the school, along with friends, family and sponsors, have taken part in The Amsterdam Marathon, Endurance Wold Run, Eastnor Castle Mud Run and the Worcester City 10K.

They also received donations from The Rose Hill charitable trust, Asda in Worcester and Waitrose in Malvern.

The first lot of donations were spent on the equipment for the playground and the money raised in the last year has gone towards the nursery play area.

They also bought specialist equipment for the pupils who are wheelchair bound such as a swing and a roundabout.

“We have been delighted so many partners, individuals and organisations have supported this activity particularly at the moment when people are having to be so careful as to where their money goes but people have been really generous.

“The equipment is outstanding and the children are just loving it,” Mrs Jones added.
