Muskets and canons at the ready at Hartlebury Castle event

GARRISONS, muskets and canons are at the ready as the English Civil War comes to Hartlebury and Upton.

Re-actors will take to the streets to celebrate the history of these two landmarks.

At Hartlebury Castle, Europe’s largest re-enactment society The Sealed Knot will bring 200 re-enactors to their event next Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4.

Chantel Summerfield, Hartlebury Castle’s operations manager, said: “Expect cannons, musket fire, pikes and even a bit of cavalry.

“We’re very excited to welcome The Sealed Knot to Hartlebury Castle.

“The Civil War is a popular part of history with our visitors, so it’s great that we can bring the era to life.”

Across the weekend, there will be hands-on activities such as pike drills and following the royalist soldiers to the featured event.

Other activities include dressing up, playing traditional games and following the civil war trail.

The event will raise funds for the Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust – a registered charity – and will focus on sustainability in recognition of the help Severn Waste Services has provided.

At Upton, the sounds of cannon fire will also be heard on September 10 between 10am and 5pm as Worcester Re-enactors will recreate one of the final battles of the civil war as part of the celebrations at Heritage Open Days.

The Upton event will include a civil war encampment in The Pepperpot Church and a march through the streets of Upton-upon-Seven.

Coun Daniel Walton, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Tourism at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Heritage Open Days are a great opportunity for us to celebrate our district and the wonderful landmarks we are lucky to enjoy.

“This year there will be plenty of exciting events to enjoy across the town centres so why not go along and see what’s on offer?”
