A MAJOR shake-up at the Guildhall looks set to take place after Worcester City Council leader Coun Marc Bayliss confirmed his intention to stand down.
The Bedwardine councillor confirmed he would depart from the role after five years should he be confirmed as the new Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia Police.
Coun Bayliss resumed a leadership role at the council in May and remains sole leader after proposals from the Green Party for the post to be shared by the Conservatives and Labour were rejected by Labour and the Lib Dems.
But after being named the preferred candidate last week, Coun Bayliss took to social media to confirm he would depart the role to devote the necessary time to his new position.
“I have had a fantastic nearly five years leading our wonderful city and working with residents and business,” he said.
Coun Bayliss, represents the Bowbrook ward on Worcestershire County Council and is the authority’s current portfolio holder for economy infrastructure and skills.
Subject to confirmation by the Police and Crime Panel on Wednesday (September 7), Coun Bayliss will support PCC John Campion on his commitment to deliver a safer West Mercia.
Coun Bayliss said: “I’m delighted to have been chosen as the preferred candidate for the role of Deputy PCC.
“I look forward to supporting John in delivering his Safer West Mercia Plan, and contributing to making West Mercia safer.
“I’m also looking forward to working with communities, West Mercia Police and other partners,” he added.
Mr Campion said: “Marc brings a wealth of experience from two decades of working for the public sector.
“He has a strong track record of standing up for his community, and I look forward to commending him to the panel.”
The next meeting of Worcester City Council is due to take place on Tuesday, September 20.
