THE MAYOR of Worcester visited a city charity which supports people with Asperger’s to help raise awareness of their work.
Coun Steve Mackay was given a tour of ASPIE, based in Sansome Walk, to find out more about the support the charity provides for people in the city and across Worcestershire with Asperger’s.
For the past six years the charity has offered a safe haven and specialised psychosocial support to adults who feel unfairly disadvantaged and marginalised because of their ‘hidden’ disability.
During his visit, Coun Mackay said he was interested in helping to expand ASPIE’s activities and met with a number of people who the charity supports.
Chair of ASPIE, Julia Micklewright, said: “We understand that being able to participate in activities with each other can help banish the crippling anxiety which can prevent individuals with Asperger’s joining groups which cater mainly for Neurotypicals.
“The sense of belonging we have engendered, which many members have never experienced before, enables them, at their own pace, to get their lives back on track.”
