THE MAYOR of Worcester swapped his chains for camouflage as he paid a visit to the Queen’s Royal Hussars’ German base.
Coun Alan Amos became the first serving city Mayor to visit the regiment in Bergen-Hohne as he drove and fired shells and rounds from two Challenger 2 tanks.
Last year the Mayor hosted a ceremony at which he presented the Freedom of Worcester to the Queen’s Royal Hussars – and was subsequently invited to spend time with the Regiment on duty.
“The British Army is without doubt the most professional in the world – and my visit confirmed what a fantastic bunch of troops they are,” he said.
“Without doubt, one of the highlights of this mayoral year was my participation in a tank exercise – and the opportunity to develop the close relationship between the regiment and Worcester.”
The Queen’s Royal Hussars will be exercising their freedom to march through the city on Saturday, June 27, with bayonets fixed and swords drawn.
“I would urge local people to make a date to go to the Freedom Parade and enjoy what promises to be a great day of pride and fun,” Coun Amos added.
The Mayor has made a donation of £500 to the QRH Regimental Funds from his charity budget, to be spent for the benefit of the troops.
