THE MAYOR of Worcester took to Broad Street this week on a mobility scooter as part of a visit to ShopMobility Worcester, highlighting the importance of accessibility within the city centre.
During the visit, Coun Dr Matt Lamb, the Mayor of Worcester, met volunteers and service users before undertaking an accompanied mobility scooter demonstration in the pedestrianised area.
ShopMobility Worcester, based in Friary Walk (formerly Crowngate) Shopping Centre Car Park, provides affordable daily hire of mobility scooters and wheelchairs.
The charity is run with the support of dedicated volunteers and relies on sufficient customer usage to maintain affordable pricing and sustain its fleet.
Tony Stockham, Chair of Trustees, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Mayor and show him the vital service our volunteers provide every day.
“Accessibility benefits the whole city. Mobility and independence are fundamental to participation in city life. We’re proud to help make Worcester accessible to all.”
Coun Lamb said: “It was a pleasure to visit ShopMobility Worcester and see first-hand the essential support they provide to residents and visitors alike. I am grateful to their volunteers and supporters, whose commitment ensures this valuable service continues to benefit our city.”
