A MAGNOLIA tree has been planted by the Mayor of Worcester to celebrate a decade of hard work to preserve Gheluvelt Park.

Coun Alan Amos was joined by members of the Gheluvelt Park Friends at the ceremony where he planted the tree and put a commemorative plaque in front of it last Thursday (March 19).

The group has worked over the last ten years to attract funding and investment to the park, they have promoted it as a much-loved community destination and have been working with Worcester City Council ti maintain it to a high standard.

The Gheluvelt Park Friends group were instrumental in securing Green Flag status for the park which it has held for eight years/ They applied for National Lottery to install outdoor exercise equipment including table tennis tables and gym apparatus.

Coun Amos said: “The Friends of Gheluvelt Park have worked wonders over the last decade, ensuring that this beautiful place is one of the jewels in Worcester’s crown, valued and loved by people across our city and beyond. Thanks to them it always looks a treat.”

Allen Barnatt, chairman of Gheluvelt Park Friends, said: “This is a great honour for the Friends. As a group we are committed to supporting and developing Gheluvelt Park, doing our best to maintain its status as an enormously popular destination where people can relax and enjoy themselves. We are delighted at being recognised in this way.”

The Friends are strong supporters of the Take Pride campaign to keep Worcester’s streets and open spaces in a clean and appealing state. At an event last year to thank all the Take Pride supporters, the Mayor made a special award to the Friends, also consisting of a commemorative plaque and the new tree.
