A MALVERN man has been sentenced to 21 years for rape.

David Gilks, aged 30, of Sayers Avenue, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court.

He will serve 14 years in prison and a further seven years on extended licence.

He was also sentenced to four years in prison for coercive control, which will be served concurrently.

And he will be subject to a lifetime sexual harm prevention order.

Gilks was found guilty of the charges on December 23 following a trial at Worcester Crown Court.

The offences took place during 2019.

Det Insp Dave Hall, who led the investigation for West Mercia Police, said: “I hope Gilks’ sentence sends a clear and strong message that we can and do take all reports of rape seriously, and will work tirelessly to secure charges against those responsible.

Reporting crimes like these can take a lot of courage, and I would like to commend the victim in this case on the immense strength she showed in coming forward to police, and also throughout the trial.”

He added there was a wealth of help and support available for people affected by rape, sexual assault, coercive control and similar crimes, regardless of whether they have been reported to the police.

“The effect of crimes like these can’t be underestimated and I would urge anyone who has been affected to take advantage of the help available,” added DI Hall.
