Lynn's Labour of love leads to new crossing

Worcester Editorial 14th Feb, 2022   0

PEDESTRIANS using the busy Midland Road and Newton Road junction will be safer from next month after the campaigning efforts of a Cathedral councillor.

Adjacent to Shrub Hill station and on a blind bend where Newtown Road exits from under the railway bridge, the junction is a notoriously dangerous area of the city’s road network.

Currently, there is no dropped kerb to support disabled people, pedestrians or pushchairs, and lack of proper drainage causes regular issues with flooding.

These problems will be resolved after several years by the end of March, as the County Council completes construction of a new pedestrian crossing in the area.

Following several County Council sessions which saw Coun Lynn Denham raise the issue, approval was secured last September, with construction now imminent.

Funding has been provided through Coun Denham’s own highways fund and the leading Labour voice revealed her delight in seeing the project through to completion.

“This is a great result for the people of the local area. Midland Road is a well-known problem location, so I’m glad to be able to have helped deliver a safe crossing,” she said.

“Projects which benefit pedestrians, disabled people or pushchairs are unfortunately not always seen as important by some councillors, so being able to see the crossing completed is a proud moment.”
