Lotto boosts funding for elderly

A POPULAR project run by a former Mayor of Worcester has secured a further £10,000 of funding to help the city’s elderly.

Come On In, set up by Coun Alan Amos in 2014 aims to help local organisations apply for grants which can be used to work with elderly people in the city.

The project has so far generated £65,000 for the city with a further £30,000 awaiting grant approval.

The latest church to benefit is St Stephen’s in the parish of Barbourne which has been awarded £10,000 via the Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.

The church successfully applied for funds to make some of its church hall more “age friendly”, which has included the building of a much-wanted walk-in storage site alongside the purchase of lightweight tables.

Coun Amos, who is standing for election in Bedwardine in the forthcoming City Council elections, said: “Almost from the word go we realised that local churches were the most suitable organisation to move this idea forward.

“Churches do not have huge staffing overheads. They are invariably staffed by people who live in the local community and understand the problems other local residents may face.

“And above they are organisations with a deserved reputation for getting on and doing something, as opposed to sitting around talking about it,” he added.
