THE RECORD-breaking fund-raising efforts of Captain Tom Moore, who celebrates his 100th birthday today, have inspired a local artist to immortalise him in a poignant original drawing.

Second World War veteran Captain Moore’s 100-lap challenge of his own back garden to celebrate his centenary has become a global phenomenon during the Coronavirus crisis, raising more than £29million and counting for NHS Charities Together.

Ilmington artist Naomi-Hands Smith sketched and painted the new national treasure completing his last lap in an original ink and watercolour artwork featuring him walking towards a rainbow, a symbol the UK has adopted to show praise for our care-workers.

Naomi said the drawing of Captain Tom Moore was a personal reminder not to be blinded by celebrity, wealth or power anymore, but to look amongst ourselves for the answers.

“He was the one to make the difference. He has achieved the most astonishing thing. Not only has he raised the most incredible amount of money but he has also reminded us all that anything is truly possible,” she said.

“He could never have known this at the start of his own personal journey, yet just by trying he has made the difference. This message is more powerful than any celebrity or politician at this time.”

“I wanted to show Captain Tom on the very last lap of his garden. He looks up and there he sees the rainbow – this time in recognition of his incredible efforts for the NHS.”

Naomi, who is married to Christopher with whom she has two children, sells her own original art on her Meantime Illustrations website (www.meantimeillustrations.com) following a passion that came about when her youngest went to school – the drawings being what she did in the meantime while the children were not around in the day anymore!

Naomi believes art can be a great healer during the Covid-19 lockdown when people may be feeling stressed, anxious or under pressure.

“I think trying anything creative that feels true to you is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself,” she said.

“Modern life has been so busy, and if you do find yourself with a little time now would be the perfect chance to invest in yourself.

“Remember Captain Tom Moore took one step to start what has become the story of our times.”

Prints of the drawing are not available, so Naomi urges anyone inspired by her picture of Captain Tom to make a donation at his page  http://justgiving.com/fundraising/tomswalkforthenhs
