Labour aims to boost county’s economy

‘SUPPORT the Worcestershire Pound’ – that’s the message from the county council’s opposition Labour group as it builds toward the May 6 local elections.

The party says its economic ambition is to build on the concept of keeping things local, keeping the wealth generated by Worcestershire in Worcestershire, to benefit everyone.

“Why is the average salary nearly £5,000 higher in Warwickshire than it is in Worcestershire?” said Labour Group Leader Robin Lunn (Redditch North).

“There is no reason why this should be so and the key aim of a Labour-run county council is to transform this position so we catch up the average salary in our neighbouring county.

“Worcestershire people have talent and skills.

“We will encourage local entrepreneurs, not for profit enterprises and local co-operatives using the influence power and wealth of the council.”

He added: “We want to encourage the ‘Worcestershire Pound’.

“We will use the buying power of the county council to ensure local businesses and local people are invited to provide their services.

“Spending Worcestershire money with Worcestershire businesses, employing Worcestershire people and putting Worcestershire first.

“We will also introduce a fair employment charter to ensure those working for contractors on behalf of the council are not exploited or treated unfairly. We will ensure all contractors will pay the Living Wage.

“This means putting the people of Worcestershire at the heart of what we do, helping to achieve aspirations and allowing people to help themselves.

“It means involving people in the decisions which impact on their lives, not by token consultation at the end of a process, but by real involvement from the beginning.

“Our economic approach will benefit all and do everything it can to increase localism and wages within the county.”
