King Charles III coronation set for May - will we get a bank holiday?

Worcester Editorial 12th Oct, 2022   0

KING Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Camilla, the Queen Consort, will accompany the King to the service and will also be crowned in the historic ceremony.

His Majesty ascended to the throne following the death of Elizabeth II on September 8 but the coronation will mark the symbolic start of his reign.

Next year’s coronation will be the first for almost 70 years – the last being for Elizabeth II in June 1953 – and the first held on a Saturday since Edward VII in 1902.

It’s not known whether a Bank Holiday will be added to mark the occasion or whether the May Day Bank Holiday, penciled in for May 1, will be moved to later in the week.

Buckingham Palace has indicated the ceremony will combine the ancient and modern – saying it will be ‘rooted in longstanding traditions’ but will also ‘reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future’.

Camilla, the Queen Consort will be crowned as part of the service, in a similar but simpler ceremony to the crowning of the King.
