Hunting claims spark call for urgent action

Worcester Editorial 25th Mar, 2021   0

A CALL for action to tackle those who are illegally hunting with dogs on the Laugherne Brook nature reserve had been made.

Coun Richard Udall made the call after he received a number of complaints about people hunting for rabbits without permission to hunt on city council land.

The reserve is owned by the City Council and therefore hunting without the council’s consent would be a criminal offence. The police advice is for residents to support the police by reporting the activity if offences are seen.

“We must not allow anyone to hunt in this nature reserve,” he said.

“This is an outdated activity which has no place in a nature reserve, it has to stop, anybody engaged in hunting has to understand they are breaking the law, they do not have permission and it could be a serious offense.

“The Laugherne Brook Nature Reserve is full of wildlife, including mammals which have been traditionally hunted, but those days are gone; the reserve should be a safe place for all wildlife.

“The hunters need to know that we will do all within our power to prevent any illegal hunting on council owned land.

“The hunters have been warned, they must stay away and leave the nature reserve for animals and those who love and appreciate nature,” Coun Udall added.

A City Council spokesperson said: “The Laugherne Brook Nature Reserve is owned by the City Council and therefore hunting without the Council’s consent would be a criminal offence.

“We have contacted the police, who confirm that they would have the powers to arrest if necessary.”
