Homes spark concerns

Worcester Editorial 13th Jan, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

NEW HOMES are set to be built in a quiet village on the edge of Worcester despite fears it will send out ‘the wrong message’ to the surrounding area.

A total of six properties will be constructed on Church Road in Crowle after Wychavon District Council’s planning committee approved the decision last Thursday (January 8).

Proposals split the committee due to the site being allocated outside the emerging SWDP (South Worcestershire Development Plan) and questions were raised as to ‘whether the development was needed’.

Coun Margaret Rowley said: “The village is quite concerned about this development because it is a non-allocated site outside the development boundary.

“The allocated site has been built and there are 25 houses across the road, when the village was only required to take 20 houses, so there is a lot of concern about the initial impact this will have on the village.

“There are also questions as to whether this application is actually needed.”

Plans at the Hackett End site include four detached homes and a pair of semi-detached properties but councillors said they were worried approving developments outside the SWDP could trigger similar proposals.

Coun Ron Davies said: “I have to say I have some concerns about this development simply because it is a rural location.

“It is an application outside the SWDP and if it is approved it sends out the wrong messages to the rest of the villages in Wychavon.”

Coun Rob Adams said he wanted to see the village benefit from any development that was set to take place.

“Poor old Crowle I say,” he added. “In saying Crowle has expanded like a lot of villages through Wychavon and Worcestershire isn’t a reason to refuse this but I also think, what is in it for Crowle?

“Have you got the maximum amount of money that is going to be used in Crowle.”

Seven councillors voted in favour of the development, six were against it and two abstained.
