A grand way to help centre

A CITY centre charity received a welcome new year boost after staff were handed a ‘much needed’ £1,000 to help repair and maintain the site.

Maggs Day Centre was given the funding from The Screwfix Foundation as part of the national charity’s pledge to help fix and improve properties in need throughout the country.

Stuart Livingstone, director of retail for Screwfix stores in the west, went along to the Deansway site with a number of his colleagues to learn about the work they do and donate a full day of their time to assist with a range of DIY projects.

The garden areas around the centre were re-landscaped, the inside was painted and decorated and an agreement was made with one of Screwfix’s partners, Resolution Interiors, to upgrade the lighting and make it energy efficient.

Mr Livingstone said: “We are really pleased one of our local charities has been awarded funding by The Screwfix Foundation.

“It is fantastic to see the money raised by staff from across the business being invested back into such a worthwhile cause.

“What’s more, my colleagues and I have had the privilege of being able to volunteer and help Maggs Day Centre so that they can continue to provide the very best services for the centre users.

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to become involved in the local community and to support a great cause.”

The foundation was launched in April 2013 and works closely with Bernardo’s and Macmillan Cancer Support as well as supporting smaller charities like Maggs Day Centre.

Mel Kirk, from the day centre, added: “We are very grateful to The Screwfix Foundation for donating these much needed funds to support our charity, which provides breakfast, lunch and an opportunity to shower and to launder clothes for people having to sleep on the streets.

“The money will go towards building repair works and the replacement of a toilet so we can best meet the needs of those who use our services.”

The next round of funding takes place at the beginning of this year and projects from Worcester have been encouraged to apply by visiting screwfixfoundation.com online.
